Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program

Summit Oaks Hospital provides a safe environment on our new 28-bed dual diagnosis treatment unit for individuals suffering from both psychiatric and chemical dependency problems. Our program professionals provide comprehensive evaluation, crisis intervention and stabilization.

Inpatient treatment is provided by a dedicated team of psychiatrists. Behavior and medications are closely monitored and managed by a team of mental health professionals including nurses, social workers and therapists. Patients learn to identify and understand their mental illness, and are taught how to safely manage psychiatric symptoms.

Inpatient treatment is also designed to assist patient in working on their recovery and maintain a substance free lifestyle. This is achieved through a combination of groups and individualized treatment in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

We offer an interdisciplinary approach combining the 12-Step model, relapse prevention principles and concentration, and psychological and psycho-educational interventions.

Additional treatment modalities include pet therapy, art therapy, yoga therapy, and other recreational therapies.

Patients must be able to complete activities of daily living with minimal assistance and participate actively in group activities.

Although discouraged, smoking is permitted for those patients who are over the age of 18, are nicotine dependent, and will experience withdrawal effects that will interfere with their treatment. A smoking cessation program is provided for those patients who wish to stop smoking. Patients are strongly encouraged to participate in this program. Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas. A fresh air break schedule is posted at the Nurses Station. Patients must supply their own cigarettes.
